Charles Kao CUHK BEAT AD Service
The Charles K. Kao Foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease (CKKF), in partnership with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), launched the Charles Kao CUHK BEAT AD (Brain HEAlth Service for PrevenTion of Alzheimer’s Disease) Service Pilot Programme (the Service) in September 2023 to provide free, comprehensive, community-based Alzheimer’s disease screening to Hong Kong residents.
With a generous donation from Dr Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia, BEAT AD Patron and Ambassador, the Service will identify elderly with early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease, or at risk of developing the disease, and implement tailored preventive measures.
Aims
1. To provide free initial screening assessments by nurses for the elderly aged 60-80 who are recently suspected of having cognitive impairment and are facing financial difficulties. The goal is to determine the severity of symptoms and possible causes, and to recommend the next steps for medical arrangements.
2. For those who are suspected or diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s disease, the team will help them, free of charge, to identify some potentially harmful but reversible risk factors for brain health and develop personalised control plans to delay disease progression.
3. For those who do not currently show obvious symptoms of cognitive impairment but are interested in learning how to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, the team is committed to providing free brain health assessments and educational services to reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future.
